Florida
Florida Territory and Conflicts
Spain was in control of Florida and had colonized it. Their population was diverse because they had Seminole Indians, Spanish colonists, runaway slaves, and English traders. In the year of 1804, Jefferson sent two negotiators to Spain to buy Florida. Spain decided not to sell Florida to America. Americans in the South wanted to annex Florida to the U.S. because many slaves ran away to Florida and Seminole Indians planned attacks on the lands of white landowners. These reasons made slaveowners and landowners furious. Spain's control on Florida started to decrease because of the raids on farms in the South by the Seminoles and runaway slaves. President James Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to end the raids made by the Seminoles and runaway slaves. Although Jackson was told not to invade the Spanish colony, he did anyways. With an army of 1,700 troops, Jackson and his men captured Spanish military posts. Jackson replaced the governor of Florida with an American and also executed two British subjects for encouraging Indian attacks. Spain wanted Jackson out of Florida. Instead of ordering Jackson to leave America. John Quincy Adams suggested that America should send a message to Spain saying "govern properly or get out. Spain feared war, so they decided to get out. In 1819, the Spanish government provided Florida to the U.S. To acquire Florida, the United States had to pay off $5 million in settlers' claims against Spain. The United States also, in exchange for Florida, had to agree to stay away from Texas. Many Americans were happy with the Florida acquisition but others were angered. The Senate ratified the Florida treaty. This is an explanation of Florida and which conflicts arose.
